When Jesus was crucified there were two criminals crucified next to Him. One of them mocked Jesus and said, “If you are the Messiah, save yourself and us.” But the other criminal defended Jesus and said, “We indeed receive our punishment as due reward for our [evil] deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” – Luke 23:39-41
Jesus indeed did nothing wrong.
He always obeyed the will of God the Father and fulfilled the just requirements of the Old Testament Law. He lived a sinless life and died on the cross – not for His sins, but for ours. The apostle Peter wrote of the vicarious sacrifice of Jesus:
“who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth…Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree [the cross], that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness…” – 1 Peter 2:22-24
Many times we get confused and wonder about the difficult circumstances that afflict our lives. “Is God mad at me?”, we ask ourselves. “Have I done something wrong?” Many of these questions and doubts are generally unfounded because trials, tribulations, and suffering are a normal part of the Christian life. When they occur, we are to follow Jesus’ example of patience, and respond to these difficulties and persecutions with prayer and blessings. When Jesus was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten or react bitterly, but committed Himself to Him (God the Father) who always judges and responds righteously (1 Peter 2:23).
Remember that your circumstances do not alter God’s love for you, nor His concern for your well being. He continues to love you and watch over you no matter what you may have to undergo. Regardless of what difficulty you’re going through today, commit yourself to God’s care and ultimate deliverance. He will give you the grace and strength to see you through to victory.
Continue to live committed to your faith in Christ and His example of endurance, despite your difficult circumstances. This is the true test of your growth as a Christian and the testimony of a true follower of Jesus Christ.
