Our prayers go out to the families of the Sandy Hook tragedy in Connecticut which left 20 people dead – 20 of them young children. May the Lord comfort their hearts and draw them closer to the God of all comfort, Jesus Christ.
U.S. President Barak Obama spoke about the sadness he feels regarding the age of the children who were killed last Friday morning, all of them being between five and ten years old. “They had their entire lives ahead of them…”, he stated. The president, who shares two daughters with the first lady, also pointed to the importance of Scripture during such tragic times, specifically quoting Psalm 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
This senseless killing reminds us of the same type of demonic evil that was perpetrated on the children of Bethlehem by King Herod who slaughtered all the innocent male children in Judea in order to eliminate the threat of Jesus becoming the new king of the Jews. His plan did not succeed, however, because God warned Joseph and Mary to flee with their child before the soldiers arrived. It was a fulfillment of Bible prophecy written hundreds of years before:
“This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more.” – Jeremiah 31:15
