“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.Do not be wise in your own eyes…” – Proverbs 3:5-7a
Recently a friend of mine, who is a local business owner, told me a true story that illustrates the importance of including God in every circumstance of your life. His name is Kevin and he suggested I use this in my sermon today and I agreed it was an excellent example of how we need to trust in God for everything. He is never too busy to come to our aid.
Kevin related to me how on one occasion he and his business associates were putting up some large helium balloons advertising a sale they were having at their used car lot. As they were launching one of the advertising balloons, the rope accidentally snagged one of the men’s cell phone and took it up in the air with the balloon without their awareness. When the cell phone owner discovered his valuable phone was missing from his side, they frantically began to search all over the used car lot to no avail. They looked all over the ground, under boxes and cars in search of the lost phone. They even tried to call the phone from another phone and could hear it ring several times, but could not figure out where the cell phone had disappeared to.
After a frustrating hour of searching everywhere on the ground, they decided to “look up” and discovered the phone dangling in the air from one of the balloon ropes. They lowered the balloon down and rescued the phone from certain calamity. Afterwards, they had a good laugh about it and Kevin reflected on the spiritual significance of this incident. He said that too often we are looking down instead of looking up. We wear ourselves out trying to solve our problems in our own limited strength and wisdom when we should be praying and including Almighty God in all of our affairs. We forget that God is a lot smarter and wiser than we are (since He is our Creator), and we would take the time each day to pray and ask His help in every area of our lives we would save ourselves a lot of frustration and wasted time.
Jesus said we should “Take His yoke upon us and learn of Him, and He will give us rest for our souls; His yoke is easy and His burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). Look up today and learn from Jesus how to best organize your life and solve your problems.
