The Blessings of the Sabbath

Many born-again, Spirit-filled believers in Jesus Christ [the Messiah] are rediscovering the validity and blessing of keeping the original Saturday Sabbath. In order to receive the blessings of the Sabbath, every follower of Jesus needs to consecrate this holy day each week to God, alter their accustomed behavior of Sunday-keeping, and resist the pressures of the world to conform to their system of reckoning days and time.

In my own walk with their Lord, this occurred a number of years ago when I became a devoted Bible student. Prior to my discovery of the true Sabbath day, I was a regular Sunday-keeper. I had been saved and born-again into a mainline denominational church and nurtured by the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. But as I grew older and wiser as a follower of Jesus, I began to discover inconsistencies in what my church was teaching and what the Bible actually said. The Holy Spirit, which indwells us and guides into all truth, is the greatest teacher of all (John 15:26, 16:8, 1 John 2:27). He, who Jesus called “The Spirit of Truth” began to give me new revelations that I never knew before, and thereby furthered the perfecting of my knowledge of Christ.

“And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that says, I know Him, and keeps not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whosoever keeps His Word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby we know that we are in Him.” – 1 John 2:3-5

One of the inconsistencies that my church was erroneously teaching, was the abrogation of the fourth commandment, namely, the sanctity of the Saturday Sabbath. I could not understand how my church claimed they believed in the Ten Commandments, but at the same time disregarded the commandment to keep the seventh day of the week holy (Exodus 20:8-11).

When I ask the pastor of my church regarding this fault, I was told that the original seventh day of rest and worship was replaced by the first day of the week (Sunday) under the New Testament. “Where does it say that in the Bible?”, I asked. My pastor replied, “Well, it doesn’t really say that in the Bible, it is simply a doctrine that our denomination believes.” I thanked the pastor for his honesty, but I decided to study further on this subject for myself and prayerfully come to my own conclusion.

Sabbath-keepers vs. Sunday-keepers

As I prayed and sought the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit, I eventually came to the personal conviction that God has never authorized anyone to change the Ten Commandments, and therefore, the seventh day of the week (Saturday) Sabbath was still God’s designated holy day. I also discovered that keeping the Sabbath is an outward sign that I belong to God.

“Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my Sabbaths you shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that you may know that I am Yahovah that does sanctify you.” – Exodus 31:13

“Moreover also I gave them my Sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am Yahovah that sanctify them.” – Ezekiel 20:12

“And hallow my Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am Yahovah your God.” – Ezekiel 20:20

Not only are we to keep the original Saturday Sabbath in obedience to God’s commandment, but it also becomes a “sign” that we are God’s elect people – saved, sanctified and set apart from the rest of humanity. Sabbath-keepers distinguish themselves from Sunday-keepers as a sign that we belong to God and to manifest His righteousness and glory.

Today, those who keep the Sabbath are no longer limited to odd Christian fringe groups such as the Seventh-Day Adventists and others. More and more believers within mainstream Christianity are rediscovering the sanctity and blessing of Sabbath observance. Numerous individual believers, religious groups, Bible scholars and church leaders are now taking a fresh look at Sabbath observance. Many of these have also ceased the unbiblical practice of Sunday-keeping in place of the true Sabbath.

If you would like to study further on this subject of keeping the fourth commandment, write us for our free booklet, “The Blessings of the Sabbath” by Pastor Luis Yosefus.  We know that God will bless you with greater wisdom and understanding of His Word as you endeavor to place truth above tradition, and learn to “think outside of the box” of pop religion.

In the Master’s service,
