Are you really saved?

By Luis Josephus

“Have I been so long time with you, and yet have you not known Me?” – John 14:9

Come Unto JesusIt is quite possible to think you are a “Christian” and not really know the Lord Jesus in a personal way. Many might find that hard to believe, but it happens a lot. I can truthfully say that I had considered myself a Christian for most of my early life. As a boy I went to church regularly, prayed, learned my catechism, confessed my sins to the priest, and took the Holy Communion. But I really wasn’t saved. nor really knew the true Jesus of the Bible. I was practicing a religion without having a genuine relationship with God.

Calling yourself a “Christian” doesn’t automatically make you a Christian. Today, the term “Christian” has become more of a cultural label than a true testimony that Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, dwells in you.

Until I was spiritually “born again” and personally invited Jesus the Messiah to become my Savior and Lord, I didn’t really become a true Christian. When I had this life-altering experience at the age of 29, I didn’t really know God. Jesus came to dwell in my heart by the power of the Holy Spirit and my life was transformed for the better. I realized what I had been missing all of my life was a personal encounter with the Living God. I finally understood the words of Jesus to Nicodemus, a religious Jew and leader in his church, that he needed to be born again.

There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. ‘Rabbi,’ he said, ‘we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.’ Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” – John 3:1-3

Like Nicodemus, you may consider yourself religious, or even believe you are already a Christian, but if you’re not sure that you are really spiritually born again, you’re probably not really saved. If you’re not sure, pray this prayer of faith right now and invite Jesus to become your Savior and Lord of your life:

“Dear Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God who came to die on the cross for the penalty of my sins. I repent of my sins and ask you to forgive me. I invite you today to become my Savior and the Lord of my life. I submit myself in obedience to you and ask you to take full control of me; change me into your image, and help me to be the kind of person you created me to be. Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer, email us with your complete postal address and let us know so that we can rejoice with you and welcome you into our Christian family. We will also send you some helpful study materials to enrich your Christian growth.

The Next Step

Now that you have received Jesus Christ as the Savior and Lord of your life, below are some necessary and practical steps you need to take to grow in your development as a Christian.

1. Prayer – It is important for you to spend time talking to God every day through prayer. Thank Him for your salvation, share your thoughts and concerns, and pray for the needs of others.

2. Bible Study – Personal Bible study is the primary way that God speaks to us and instructs us on how to live. As you read the Bible, ask God to show you which passages apply to your life. A good place to start your study is by reading the Gospel of John in its entirety.

3. Join a Good Church – Attend regularly and get involved with other Christians. As you get plugged into a local church, you will receive the teaching, encouragement, support, and fellowship you need to become a mature Christian.

4. Tell Others About Jesus – Share your new faith with others who need to know God. Invite family and friends to go to church with you.

5. Live a Godly Life – Make every effort to live a new life in Christ by practicing holiness, goodness, self-control, perseverance, kindness, and love.

Testimony of Rose Price – Nazi Concentration Camp Survivor

EDITOR’S NOTE: Rose Price went to be with the Lord in the spring of 2015. She was 87 years old. Rest in Peace, dear one.  – LJM

Rose Price spent five years in a Nazi concentration camp. She narrowly escaped death time after time at the hand of her German tormentors. Her entire family except for her sister and aunt, never came out of the death camps. She recalls, “I was hit on the head with a cross by a Roman Catholic priest simply because I was a Jew. He called me a ‘Christ killer”. For many years Rose learned to hate the “Jesus” of her persecutors and vowed never to have anything to do with Christianity. But when she met “the real Jesus” of the Bible – the one who truly loved her and died for her redemption, she willingly embraced Him as her Messiah.

Rose Price

Rose Price was born of Orthodox Jewish parents in Poland. As a small child she tasted deeply of the persecution that the Jewish people have endured down through the ages. Rose, along with the millions of Jews living in Europe personally entered into a dark time in human history known as the “Holocaust.” A time when a man named Hitler who, inspired by Satan, set his face to destroy the entire Jewish race.

During the horror of World War II, Rose spent five years in concentration camps, narrowly escaping death time after time from the hand of her tormentors. Her entire family except for her sister and aunt, never came out of the death camps. But out of the smoldering ruins of Europe, God brought forth smoldering remnants of human life, and one of these firebrands was Rose.

After immigrating to the United States, Rose met and married Charlie Price and settled in Philadelphia to raise a family of four children — two daughters and two sons. Rose was president of her neighborhood synagogue in spite of the fact that she did not believe in God. The horrors of the war had made her angry at God and she turned her unforgiving heart from Him completely. Yet she did want her children to know of their Jewish heritage and because of this became very involved in temple service.

One at a time, Rose’s daughter and husband met the Messiah Yeshua (Jesus), causing great anguish and distress to Rose. The story of how she, too, encountered her Messiah and surrendered her life to Him, lets one know that God is compassionate and merciful; His love is, indeed, for the lost sheep of the House of Israel. Don’t miss this vibrant testimony of how the Shepherd of Israel makes His claim on the life of one of those lost sheep, Rose Price — and how He lovingly brings her into fellowship with Him.

Rose has spoken at Churches, Synagogues, and both public and private schools in more than 30 of the United States of America. She was a featured speaker at “Berlin for Jesus” and in Nuremberg at the Anniversary of Hitler’s proclamation. She has been an honored guest in Canada, Poland, Jamaica, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

Did Jesus have long hair?

Jesus_long hairWe actually don’t know what Jesus looked like since there is no archaeological record depicting His appearance dating back to the first century. In addition, the early Christians abstained from making graven images less they find themselves committing the sin of idolatry:

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God…” -Exodus 20:4-5

Therefore, none of the early disciples captured Jesus’ likeness in any form.

It was only after hundreds of years later that images appeared of Jesus when segments of Christianity were corrupted by the Roman Catholics. During this period, graven images, statues, and paintings were made of Jesus. By that time, no one really remembered what He looked like. These images typically depicted a blonde haired, blue-eyed Jesus, or with European features. However, they were based on the artist’s faulty imagination.

Although it is possible that Jesus had long hair as a “Nazarene” (Matthew 2:23), long hair on men was not the normal hairstyle in the Jewish culture. “The Jewish texts ridiculed long hair as something Roman or Greek,” said New York University’s Lawrence Schiffman (Jesus Scholars Find Fault in Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion’”) (1 Cor. 11:14)

It is more likely that Jesus looked like the average Jew of His day with dark brown hair or black, cut relatively short, traditional Jewish beard, and Semitic facial features. He was not the sometimes effeminate-looking man that is commonly pictured in paintings. Since He was a carpenter and a builder, He was most probably muscular and tanned from working long hours outdoors cutting down trees, hauling rocks, and constructing buildings from stone and timber.

Teach Me Your Ways, Lord

Young woman reading bible by stream in summerTeach me Lord Jesus
The way of righteousness
Help me to love God
With all my heart

Strengthen my faith
That I may trust You
In the good times
As well as the trials

Let me be confident
That all things work together
For my highest good
Because at all times God is in control

I want to follow
The true way of life
Not empty religion
Which leads to sadness & bondage

You are the Son of God
That sets me free
Salvation from sin,
Life eternal, happiness & peace

Teach me Your ways, Lord
Teach me your ways
Teach me Your ways, Lord
To glorify You in every way

Our belief in one God.

Abraham, the father of our faith.

Abraham, the father of our faith.

“Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God is one LORD.” – Deuteronomy 6:4

New Testament believers can gain a deeper understanding of our faith in God and Jesus our Messiah when we study the history of Abraham, the “Father of our faith” (Romans 4:11). Abraham was the man that God personally chose to begin a new nation of people who would willingly separate themselves from the worship of false gods and follow the one true (YHVH) God, Creator of the universe. Yahovah God wants a people that would devote themselves to Him alone, and teach others the same. He is to be the sole object of our love, obedience and worship.

“The LORD said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” – Genesis 12:1-3

In God’s divine purpose to redeem fallen humanity, Abraham became the first person of his generation to know, teach and follow the one true God. As a result of Abraham’s faithfulness, God promised to bless him and his descendants – far above all other people of the earth, and greatly multiply his offspring to become as numerous as the sand in the sea and the stars in heaven. Through him all nations have been blessed that believe (Genesis 17:1-5).

Monotheism in the Old Covenant.

Abraham’s monotheistic* faith was unique in his day since most of the people around him were pluralistic in their religious beliefs. They worshipped multiple false gods such as Dagon, Baal, Molech, Chemosh, Ishtar, Horus, Isis, Gilgamesh, Marduk, Tammuz, and so on.

God taught Abraham to separate himself from all this religious confusion (babel) and superstition, and discontinue the idolatrous practice of bowing down to graven images made of wood and stone, gold and silver. He was also to teach others to worship the one true God in Spirit and truth.

The new monotheistic religion that Abraham founded later became known as “Judaism”, and the enlightened people he fathered became known as the “Nation of Israel.” Today, under the New Covenant, all believers in Jesus the Messiah are the true Israel of God, and spiritual sons and daughters of Abraham.

The Mezuzah, traditionally hung on most doorposts which contains the SHEMA prayer.

The Mezuzah, traditionally hung on most doorposts which contains the SHEMA prayer.

The Shema prayer

For thousands of years, the holy people of God have recited the SHEMA prayer as a reminder and affirmation of their belief in the one true God. The Shema prayer comes from Deuteronomy 6:4, “Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheynu Adonai Echad”, meaning, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD [Yahovah] our God, the LORD [Yahovah] is one.” Even today, the Shema is the central prayer in the Jewish prayerbook and is often the first prayer a child learns. Many Jews recite the Shema at least twice daily: once in the morning and once in the evening. The Shema is also written on a small scroll which is then rolled up and put inside a Mezuzah attached to the front doors of many homes.

Abraham preaches the one true God.

The Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus, relates how God used Abraham to teach many in his day about the importance of monotheism and the worship of the one true God, Yahovah, also referred to as YHVH or Yahweh or Jehovah.

“When Abraham was 75 years old, he left the land of Chaldea, by the command of God, and went into another country called Canaan. He was the first to declare boldly that God, the Creator of the universe is ONE…Because of these opinions, the Chaldeans rose up against him, and so he migrated to Canaan with God’s help.’

It is interesting to note that his own countrymen in Ur of the Chaldeas, where Abraham was born, got so angry at him for preaching the truth about a “one true God” that they chased him out of their land. He probably escaped with his life. If it had not been for God’s protection, he might have been murdered by his own countrymen. These Chaldeans and Babylonians were pantheistic idol worshippers and resented being told they were wrong in their religious beliefs. Many likely refused to give up their worship of multiple gods and became furious with Abraham for pointing out their error.

Abraham then fled to the land of Canaan, and later Egypt, where he also preached the truth. Flavius Josephus doesn’t mention whether Abraham experienced the same type of religious persecution in these other nations, but it is very likely that he did. Although God always has a remnant of people in every nation that will receive the truth and worship Him alone, the majority it seems will turn a deaf ear. The apostle Paul described these type of people in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4…

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost; in whom the god of this world system [Satan] has blinded the minds of them which choose to believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Messiah, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

Have you been persecuted for your faith?

Has God called you to ‘come out from among them’ and separate yourself from those who are living in religious darkness? Are you being persecuted for refusing to participate in idol worship and pagan practices? Be encouraged by Abraham’s example of courage against the opposition that comes from those who believe not. Remember that all who will live godly in Messiah will suffer persecution.

Our Lord taught us, “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” – Matthew 5:11-12

Is it now lawful to eat all types of meats?

Yes. Under the New Covenant that Jesus instituted, all dietary prohibitions against unclean meats have been removed. However, it is important that all foods should be received with thanksgiving and prayer. The apostle Paul declared that all creatures were created by God to be received with thanksgiving of them that believe and know the truth.

“For every creature of God is good, and not to be rejected, if it be received with gratitude: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” – I Timothy 4:4-5

First of all, we must give thanks to God for every meal we partake each day, recognizing that without our heavenly Father’s loving provision of health, work and finances, we could not survive or provide for our families. Secondly, through prayer, any harmful chemicals, bacteria or toxins that our food might contain is eliminated.

A proper prayer over our meals might include, “LORD, we thank you for providing this meal we are about to eat. We ask that you purify it and sanctify it, make it nourishing to our bodies, In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”

Also, it is important to consider that our Christian liberty is never license for failing to maintain certain health precautions. Common sense and wisdom, as well as modern scientific evidence dictates that we follow the following guidelines:

  • Eat a healthy diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as meats.
  • Cook foods properly.
  • Avoid overeating and gluttony.
  • Eliminate high fat and sugar intake.
  • Do not abuse drugs or alcohol.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Maintain good habits of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Allow for ample rest.

If you observe the above guidelines as well as praying over each meal with thanksgiving, you shall do well. God desires that all His faithful children should be in good health and prosper, as well as live long lives.

Comment from Cygnet: “Exactly! I think that people who try to follow the old covenant are people much like the Pharisees of Jesus’ day. They were prideful that their actions were to the letter of the law than they were receptive to God’s love. Salvation is not contingent upon what I do, but upon what He [Jesus] has already done for each of us. Praise God for His Grace!”
