How the Thanksgiving “Tukki” got it’s name.

Many of us here in America will be celebrating the national holiday of Thanksgiving this coming November 28, 2013.

It’s a special day set aside each year during the last Thursday of November for families to gather together and give thanks to God Almighty for all His manifold blessings. A traditional banquet of baked turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, various vegetables, fruit pies, and other delicious foods are served.

But did you know that the traditional turkey eaten at Thanksgiving was named by a Jewish doctor?

American Turkey

American Turkey

When Christopher Columbus discovered the new world (i.e. Cuba, Hispañola, and other Caribbean Islands) in 1492, a Jewish physician and interpreter, LUIS DE TORRES sailed with him. He was likely fleeing the notorious Spanish Inquisition and persecution of Jews in Spain of that time.* The large North American bird known today as the turkey was first seen by Columbus and his passengers. Thinking the huge bird was a parrot, Luis de Torres exclaimed, “Tukki!”, which is the Hebrew word for parrot. The name stuck from that time on and was later translated into English as TURKEY.

Happy Thanksgiving Day

Here at Real Jesus Ministries, Inc., we want to wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving Day and God’s richest blessings in the coming year.

Sincerely in Christ,

*Although some sources claim that Luis de Torres converted to Catholicism before leaving Spain, this is not likely, since local indians in the new world remember him speaking “offensively and disparagingly” about the Catholic religion, trying to dissuade anybody from adopting it.

Columbus – A Messianic Jew?

Questions & Answers

Questions & Answers

Hello Brother Luis…I heard something today that I thought was interesting and I thought perhaps you might have heard something about it. I heard and saw evidence that Christopher Columbus was actually a Messianic Jew who hid his Jewish identity because of the inquisition. Do you know anything about that? – Donna, Missouri.

Yes I do. In fact, I believe it is true. If it is, I am of Jewish ancestry since my ancestors migrated to Cuba from Spain. My last name is also of Jewish origin. During the voyages of Christopher Columbus, thousands of Spanish Jews escaped on Columbus’ ships. The Roman Catholic Inquisition in Spain was in full force – imprisoning, torturing, and killing Jews who refused to convert to Catholicism. I wrote a teaching message about this. You can click on the link below to read it.

Was Christopher Columbus Jewish?

Here is an excerpt: “I recently came across the following article on the Spanish website http://www.Semana.com. This reliable editorial details the latest revelations on the true ancestry of Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón) and the primary motivation behind the discovery of The Americas. It further confirms my own Jewish ancestry that dates back to the migration of Spanish Jews to the island of Cuba and Hispaniola on board the voyages of Columbus. Here are some highlights of these recent revelations…”

Keep in mind that I don’t like to use the term “Messianic Jew.” This term is a modern invention of the Messianic movement. I prefer to simply call them “Jewish believers,” since God’s Word rebukes sectarianism (i.e. denominational labels) which divide the Body of Christ (see 1 Corinthians 1:12-13)

“What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?

I encourage you to do your own study on these subjects and ask the Holy Spirit to give you further revelation.

Blessings in Messiah,

Pastor Luis Yosefus

New Cuba and Israel Friendship

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.” – Psalm 122:6

Israel’s Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres sent a letter of thanks to former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro for his words of support for Israel’s right to exist and empathy with the tragedies of Jewish history.

Castro, in a recent interview with The Atlantic Magazine, said Israel “without a doubt” has the right to exist, and criticized Iranian President Mahmoud Admadinejad for his Holocaust denial, saying Iran should understand the consequences of theological anti-Semitism.

“I don’t think anyone has been slandered more than the Jews,” Castro said. “I would say much more than Muslims…because they are blamed and slandered for everything. No one blames the Muslims for anything.” (Read full article, The Jerusalem Post, September 26, 2010, pag. 2).

To hear these words of support for Israel from Fidel Castro has surprised Jews and Christians around the world, but are warmly welcomed, to be sure.
