When You Miss the Mark

Backup_of_Missing the Mark 1The Bible tells us that all we are all sinners and have fallen short of the glory of God. But, what does it mean to sin?

The word sin comes from the Greek, hamartánō, which means to “miss the mark.” Miss what mark? Missing the mark is symbolism that is derived from the practice of archery – of having shot an arrow and failing to strike the target. Therefore, sin is having failed to strike the bulls eye of God’s standard of perfect obedience, or perfect living. I can relate to that! I admit, I have missed the mark many times myself. How about you?

I think we can all agree that none of us are perfect, nor have lived an absolutely perfect life. Yet, God’s standard for us to make it into heaven is still perfection, because there is no sin in heaven. Since God is holy and perfect in everything He does, everything in heaven is perfect, as it should be.

So, in order for us to be saved and allowed to enter into heaven, our heavenly Father sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to be perfect for us, and pay the penalty for our sins. Through our faith in Christ’s atoning work on the cross, His perfect obedience and righteousness is imputed unto us. Imputed means that our sin debt was placed upon Him on the cross, and His perfect righteousness is transferred unto us.

When did this occur? The day we believed.

It was a free gift of God’s grace through faith. We did not earn it, nor deserve it, but God gave it to us anyway. We are justified (cleared of all sin guilt) freely through the redemption that He provided for us in Jesus Christ.

Missing the Mark 2How far have you missed the mark?

Imagine participating in an archery competition: You shoot your arrow and get about three-quarters of the way to the target. Other people next to you shoot their arrows and only get about half the way. Still others may miss the mark by a mile while others by an inch. No matter how close anyone gets to the target, everyone is disqualified just the same. Our sin debt is like that.

Jesus Christ died to save every sinner.

It does not matter to God how close or how far you’ve gotten to the target, or how much you have sinned in the past, He is willing to forgive us all the same. Whether we’ve sinned a little or a lot, He does not judge us on this basis. Everyone is already condemned because no one was ever righteous enough to be saved by his or her own merits; everyone has missed the mark. There is none righteous, no not one.

However, when we come to faith in Christ, everyone is equally given a clean slate and allowed entrance into God’s kingdom on the same basis: By grace through faith alone.

Therefore, we conclude that since all of us have missed the mark and fallen short of God’s standard of perfection, we must enter into God’s kingdom by faith, trusting upon His grace and forgiveness. Because God is merciful, He provided a way for our sins to be punished on the cross of Christ, so that we would not have to suffer His judgment for our sins. God the Father has justified us and forgiven us completely, through our faith in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Afterward, through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, we are now capable of honoring and obeying God’s moral laws. We are no longer powerless to the desires of sin, but mighty in power to live victorious as conquerors in Christ. It is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us, who loved us and gave Himself for us.

Let us, therefore, endeavor to keep from continually missing the mark and making sinful choices. Let us honor God with our hearts, minds, and bodies forevermore.

Scripture References:

But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him apart from keeping the requirements of the law…Even the righteousness of God which is by faith in Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe, for there is no difference. For everyone has sinned, and we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” – Romans 3:21-23

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” – Ephesians 2:8-9

My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” – Galatians 2:20

“…overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.” – Romans 8:37

Study Notes:

“The Glory of God” in Romans 3:23 refers to the praise or approbation of God. The Jews had sought to be justified, or approved, by God the keeping of the Law, which was impossible to perfectly do. They did not realize they had all failed. Their works of the Law had not secured God’s approbation, and Jesus said they were still under condemnation.

The Hebrew word for sin is chata, pronounced khaw-taw. It also means to miss the target, make a mistake, an error in judgment, commit a sin against God. Sometimes the idea of sinning against a fellow human being is also present.

Walking By Faith – Not Feelings

Walking By Faith – Not Feelings.

“Indeed, our lives are guided by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7

Faith is not something that we can see or touch. We believe in God’s promises not because we can see it, but because we simply believe it. Our spirit man confirms to our minds and hearts that God is trustworthy in what He says, and thus we believe.

In fact, faith itself is a “gift from God” (Ephesians 2:8). We would not even be able to “believe” unless God gives us the gift of faith. Jesus confirmed this when He said, “No man can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him..” (John 6:44).

Jesus also declared many times to those who were miraculously healed, “Your faith has made you well.” We are saved and justified by faith (Romans 3:28). The book of Hebrews also teaches us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 1:1).

God’s Word continually reminds us that the Christian life is a life of faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. For we live by believing, and not by seeing, nor by what we “feel”.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6.

When we are “walking by faith”, we are affirming that the Christian is on a journey, or a pilgrimage, as he travels to another country. The sense here is that we remain hopeful and focused on the end of the journey, which is unseen, yet just as real as the present, which is seen.

By faith, we believe in those things which we do not see.

Living by faith is contrasted from living simply under the influence of things that are seen, or by what our feelings tells us. Since we cannot see God (or even feel Him sometimes), we know that He is always present with us. He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). As Christian who are full of faith, we live, and think, and act as if there were a God, and as if we can always see Him.

“We believe in the existence of objects which are invisible, and we are influenced by them. To walk by faith, is to live in the confident expectation of things that are to come; in the belief of the existence of unseen realities; and suffering them to influence us as if they were seen. The people of this world are influenced by the things that are seen. They live for wealth, honor, splendor, praise, for the objects which this world can furnish, and as if there were nothing which is unseen, or as if they ought not to be influenced by the things which are unseen. The Christian, on the contrary, has a firm conviction of the reality of the glories of heaven; of the fact that the Redeemer is there; of the fact that there is a crown of glory; and he lives, and acts as if that were all real, and as if he saw it all. The simple account of faith, and of living by faith is, that we live and act as if these things were true, and suffer them to make an impression on our mind according to their real nature…” – Barnes’ Notes on the Bible.

Our enemy, the devil, wants to deceive us and control us through our feelings, and the lies he whispers into our thoughts, producing assumptions which are not true, such as “God doesn’t love me anymore”, “He doesn’t want to heal me”, or “I’m suffering this way because He’s punishing me for my sins.” These kind of thoughts contradict God’s promises to us in the Bible.  We must always remember that the devil is a liar and the “father of lies” (see John 8:44). He works on our minds and our feelings to try to discourage us from believing God at His Word. That’s why unbelief is so destructive to the Christian faith.

Anytime you begin to believe the devil’s lies, instead of God’s truth, you’re not going to be healed or receive your blessing. Once we believe the lies of Satan, the lies affect our emotions, our feelings get stirred up in the wrong direction, it affects the decisions we make. Then, we lose our faith and get out of the will of God.

Unfortunately, most Christians live more by their feelings than their faith.

I often hear the following complain, “I don’t feel God loves me.” I tell them, “As a matter of fact He does. He proved it on the cross – Read John 3:16.” Or they may say, “I’ve lost hope that I have a good future.” I reassure them, “As a matter of fact you do. In Jeremiah 29:11 God tells us, ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Waiting on a Miracle. Living outside the realm of feelings.

Believers who only live by their emotions or feelings, tend to make a lot of mistakes and false assumptions. We have to learn how to live beyond our feelings and obey God’s Word – even when we don’t feel like it. We need to follow God’s promises for our lives and not let our feelings dictate what we believe.

Do you tell yourself: “I don’t feel healed today”, or “I may not feel healed today, but God promised that I am already healed, in Jesus’ name.” The difference between one statement and the second is FAITH. Faith continues to believe God’s promises of healing and provision of every other blessing, even though we don’t see it happening yet, or even feel it.

Whatever miracle you’re believing God for in your life today, believe that He can do it.

Confess His Bible promises over and over again, until they become a reality – no matter how long it takes. Keep walking in faith, and thanking Him for your miracle as it was already a done matter. Some healings and miracles are instant, whereas others take more time to manifest. It’s all in God’s timing.

God promised Abraham that He would have a son although physically it seemed an impossible task. His wife Sarah was well beyond child-bearing age. But Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to Him for righteousness. After 20 years of waiting for his miracle, God finally came through, and Sarah gave birth to their son Isaac.

You may be thinking, “Well, that was in the Old Testament. I don’t feel God still does those kinds of miracles today.” Nothing could be further from the truth. God is still the same today as He was yesterday. He is still in the “miracle business”. What He did for Abraham and other people of faith in the past, He can do it for you.

Study all of God’s promises in the Bible. Write them down, and study them. Commit them to memory. Then, pray for God’s grace to believe Him for the seemingly impossible, and you will see it come to pass!

Is Jesus the only way to God?

The Antichrist will unite all world religions into one and cause all who follow him to be condemed forever.

Could the future Antichrist claim to be the Christian Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, the Islamic Mahdi, the Buddhist Maitreya and the Hindu Kalki all at the same time? Could this be what happens when all of the major religions merge into the one world religion prophesied in the book of Revelation? The Bible predicts that the Antichrist will unite all world religions into one and cause all who follow him to be condemned forever.

Years ago before I received Jesus as my Savior and Lord, I experimented with other religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, New Age Metaphysics, the Occult, and others. One of the common threads of all these pseudo-religions was the prevalent false teaching that “All paths lead to God. It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you believe in god.” Of Course, nothing could be further from the truth. There is only ONE GOD and only ONE WAY to find Him – through Jesus Christ His Son. Only Jesus was the true Messiah, who as the Holy Lamb of God, sacrificed His life for the remission of our sins.

When I became a Christian and began to closely study the Bible. I realized that I had been deceived for many years by these counterfeit religious ideologies that had professed to show me the way to God. Even today, I often come across Muslims, for instance, who tell me, “You and I worship the same god. ‘Allah’ is the same god as your Christian God.” I quickly correct them, “No sir, he is not! The God of the Jews and Christians is not the same god you Muslims worship. The only true God, the Creator of heaven and earth is not Allah, but Yahovah. You are worshipping a false god, I’m sorry to say.” Muslims usually get offended when they hear this, but the truth is often hard to accept at first. Afterwards I always pray for their blinded eyes to be opened.

God’s way is narrow.

Yehovah God sent His only begotten Son into the world to be the sacrificial Pesach (Passover) Lamb that can take away our sins and reconcile us to the true and only God. You can follow some other (false) god if you wish, but you will deceived into following the broad road to destruction. There is only one true path to God – through His Son Jesus Christ the Messiah. Jesus declared, “…No man comes to the Father, but by Me.” (John 14:6). Perhaps you may think that is dogmatic and narrow-minded. I have to admit that it is, but it’s simply the truth. True Christianity is the only religious belief system that will bring you to God.

Man’s free will to choose right and wrong.

Now, you don’t have to follow the narrow way to salvation; you’re free to follow the broad road to destruction if you choose. God created man with a free will and allows you to reject the truth and believe anything you wish. If you persist in rejecting the right way He won’t stop you from making an eternal mistake. But He desires that none should perish but that all men should come to salvation.

“The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.” – 2 Peter 3:9

However, if you want salvation, you must come to God on His terms, not yours. You have to accept Jesus as the only true way to God or you’ll be lost. That’s just the way it is.

We cannot be saved by our own good works either.

Living a moral life, or performing good deeds is always important, but they still cannot save us. But even good deeds and a moral life can never produce the perfect righteousness that God requires for salvation. Only Jesus was sinless and perfect, and only by placing your trust in His imputed righteousness can save you. Don’t make the mistake of trying to earn your way into heaven, it’s simply impossible; that’s why God gave us the gift of Jesus.

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us” -Titus 3:5.

It is by “grace through faith in Jesus that we are saved. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” – Ephesians 2:8,9.

The minute you and I place our faith in Jesus’ substitionary death on the cross on our behalf, the way to God is open. It is the only way we can be saved.

Anyone can come.

Jesus invited everyone to come to salvation. He said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” – John 7:37. This is an all-inclusive invitation to all human beings. None are excluded except those who exclude themselves. Even the worst of sinner can be forgiven if they will repent. The Lord Jesus gives only one condition: “If any man thirst.” If you’re thirsting for salvation and the only true God, He asks you to simply come to Him. He is the only One that can satisfy you innermost desire.

Prayer of Salvation:

Pray this prayer right now with all sincerity….

“Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, the Messiah of both Jews and Gentiles. I believe that you sacrificed your life on the cross of Calvary to pay the penalty for my sins. I repent of my sins. Please forgive me. Today, I receive you as my Savior and Lord. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to live my life for You, from this day forth, amen.”

Comment from Jeff Brown: “Great word as always brother Luis! Our Heavenly Father has lovingly reached out His hand to each of us and through Christ has made a way that all may be saved! Only those who say “no” will be sent away to an eternity of their own choice and it’s just so terrible! No one would choose it if they knew the truth which is where we come in…I pray for fresh winds to blow into both of our missions, that the truth would be told from the highest mountains! In Jesus Mighty Name I ask it!”
