Love Your Neighbor
Have you ever heard the expression “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”? It might surprise you to know that there is no such scripture in the Bible. There is one scripture that expresses the same idea. Jesus said in Matthew 7:12:
“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus was teaching us that the entire Bible could be encapsulated into the important principle of being loving, kind, merciful, generous, considerate, forgiving, etc. towards others. Elsewhere Jesus declared that the two greatest commandments in the entire Bible was to love God with all our hearts, and our neighbor as ourselves. In regards to our neighbor our Lord said, we should treat others as we would want others to treat us.
This Royal Law of Love summarizes the way God would have us to live in as Christians. As we practice loving others as ourselves we will automatically be keeping many of the other commandments as well. The apostle James also put it this way:
“If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself,’ you do well.” – James 2:8
James continues, “But the wisdom that is far above (from God) is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” – James 2:17
If you want to know how to please God and live a fruitful Christian life, keep the Royal Law of Love and you shall do well.
