Show Us The Father

Pastor Luis Yosefus

“Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me…” – John 14:8-11

When the Apostle Philip asked Jesus to show him God the Father, previously he had not fully understood who Jesus the Messiah really was. Due to God’s custom of progressive revelation, many of us, like Philip, start out as “Baby Christians” and progressively grow into adult Christians as time passes.  We receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord and begin a lifelong spiritual journey whereby we grow stronger in our faith, more and more each day.  In the beginning, the Holy Spirit who indwells us feeds us primarily with spiritual baby’s milk, but as we grow as followers of Christ, He weans us away from the milk and begins to feed us solid food, when He sees that we are ready. As a result, our spiritual maturity and understanding is increased and greater revelation of who God is is given to us.

Such was the case with the Apostle Philip, when he reached a new milestone in his understanding of Jesus as God in the flesh.  He asked the Lord, “Show us the Father”. And Jesus responded. “Have I been with you these three-and-a-half years and you still don’t recognize the fact that I am God?” Immediately, Philip’s eyes were opened and he realized for the first time that Yeshua, [Jesus], his Jewish Rabbi, had been the God he had been searching for all along. Jesus Himself confirmed this to Philip and the other Disciples when He emphatically stated “Believe Me that I am in the Father (God) and the Father is in me.” –John 14:11

Elsewhere, he also stated to them, “If you had [really] known Me, you would have known [God], the Father, also: Henceforth, you now know God and have seen him: I am standing right in front of you.” (John 14:7)

Do you believe Jesus is God?

It’s important that your Christian Faith is founded on sound doctrine, because we are living in the last days before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. False teachers abound in the Church today; some even deny the divinity of Jesus. But those who are making their calling an election sure (2Peter 1:10) will never be moved away from the sure foundation of Christ’s teachings. We must earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the apostles and saints of God from the very beginning (Jude 3).
