Doing the first works

Bible_man_reading_1“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works…” – Revelation 2:4-5.

Jesus is speaking to many of us through this letter to the Church of Ephesus who had “lost their first love.” These Ephesians church members were still blood-washed, born-again believers, but they had lost the excitement and devotion they once had for Jesus. Remember when you first got saved; how excited you were about God?

Spiritual backsliding is a common problem in the church. After years of walking with God, many of us may slowly begin to neglect spending quality time with God or even going to church. Our faith becomes lukewarm and we might also backslide morally. The solution for correcting this problem, Jesus said, is to remember therefore from where we have fallen; repent, and do the first works again.

Since the first step is to repent, we need to acknowledge our sins to God and ask Him to forgive us. He is always merciful and faithful to forgive us, and to cleanse us, once again, from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

Secondly, we must start from scratch in our faith and “do the first works” we once did in the beginning. What are the first works?

  • Studying the Bible daily.
  • Spending quality time in prayer and hearing God’s voice.
  • Going to church regularly and saturating your spirit with sound biblical teaching, and collective praise and worship.
  • Fellowship regularly with other believers.

If you have lost your first love, or drifted away from God, or fallen into immoral sins, don’t give up on Jesus, because He hasn’t given up on you. He still loves you dearly and desires to restore you back to Himself. All He asks is that you Repent, Confess, and “Do the first works” again. He will restore your life with His abundance of peace and joy.

Grateful to God in all things

Grace For Today“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

An attitude of gratitude is a decision we must make every morning when we get out of bed – even when we don’t feel like it. Remember that each new day is a gift from God. The fact that we woke up at all is a blessing from God.

Even though you may have money troubles, physical ailments, rebellious children or other complaints, choose to give thanks to God in all circumstances. Don’t just thank Him for when things are going good in your life, but also for the things that are going wrong. Even our chastisements and corrections are a demonstrations of God’s love, and His design for our benefit. If we truly are trusting Jesus Christ as the Lord of our lives, then we should be confident that He is working ALL things out for our good (Romans 8:28).

Be careful not to quench the Holy Spirit by indulging in self-pity, resentment or bitterness. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus. As you do, He will reward you with His peace, joy, nearness and comfort. A truly victorious life in Christ is a life of constant joy.

FAITH STEP

Think of five things you are grateful for and concentrate on those today. Praise God for them and submit to His divine wisdom in allowing them into your life.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I praise You and thank You for everything in my life today – not only for the good, but also for any adversity I may be experiencing. I choose to have an attitude of gratitude, for I know you are working all things out for my good. I thank You especially for my salvation in Christ Jesus; for forgiving me of my sins and redeeming me with His precious blood. Amen.

Who wrote the Desert Song?

Questions & Answers

Questions & Answers

QUESTION: I absolutely love the “Desert Song” by Hillsong United. Does anybody know the story behind it? I was told that the lady who wrote it lost her baby the week before she wrote it. Does anybody have any more details? I want to know because I really think God sent me this song today when I really needed it. My sister is pregnant and the baby isn’t expected to live very long. I heard the song at church this morning for the first time and it made me cry. Then someone told me about the circumstances behind the writing of the song. Please let me know if you know any more. – Love2Sign251

ANSWER: Although many have wrongly attributed the writing to Brooke Fraser, the woman who actually wrote this most beautiful worship song is Jill McCloghry, also a member of Hillsong United.

In the following video interview below she personally describes the painful loss of her baby and her struggle with trusting God in the middle of distress, which led to the writing of the Desert Song.

Click on the video link below to view the entire interview of the making of the Desert Song:

Jill McCloghry

Jill McCloghry

In her own words, Jill recounts:

“About a week and a half before the recording, I went into labor… I was about six months pregnant with our first little boy, Max… had him at the hospital and he was only 23 weeks and five days old. So he was really little. But we had him and he was alive, and he was in the neonatal ICU, you know, where they were kind of taking care of him. And we basically spent a full day with him and we believed and we prayed that he would be okay, but we trusted that God was in control. And that night he died of, you know, just being too little basically. I actually remember sitting in a hospital right after everything happened and knowing that I needed to sing, that I needed to still do what I know I’m supposed to be doing and that I felt like that was just a victory for us. Right now, anyways, it’s just choosing to worship all the time; that’s what it is for me cause I don’t…I don’t always feel like it. Sometimes I don’t feel like singing to God, but [sigh] I know that my circumstance in the season doesn’t change and that God is still God. It doesn’t change what God’s called me to be or what He’s called me to do. He’s still on the throne in heaven, you know, and He still rules, and He still bigger than everything that I’m facing.

 Co-singer Brooke Fraser also commented:

“For Jill and I to sing together on the night was such a privilege for me. Aside from her being an amazing worship leader and being anointed and carrying the authority that she does… Just as her friend and sister in Christ, I was so proud of her and aware of the weight of her singing that. And just feeling so…I mean it was, it was a real emotional moment and just also being aware that her standing there with her glorifying God in the midst of her loss and her tragedy, and that the devil lost what he was trying to achieve.”

Jill McCloghry added:

“Even when you say things that you know are true, but you might not necessarily fully understand it, I think that just being able to look at God and say things that are true of Him, and declare the word of God, and declare the promises of God which is that, when in the fire, and when I’m being refined, and when I’m in battle, and when the triumph isn’t here yet but it’s coming, I think that you look at God and say, “I know this is who You are…” and He does get bigger in your life. It takes over the things in you that feel so shattered. And it makes Him the focus, and it begins to put those things back together.”

Sarah M. Bosse concluded:

“Like Job, we must sing and praise through the pain. That’s REAL WORSHIP – it connects with REAL LIFE and raises up a trusting hand to the One who reaches down to save us from drowning. It acknowledges God in the midst of life and declares, “There is a GREATER REALITY and I live in and for that REALITY!” No one but the Christian has such a claim and right to hope in eternal life with the Saving God.”

Hillsong United Video

Brooke Fraser and Jill McCloghry singing the Desert Song.

In this concert video Jill McCloghry begins by reading Psalm 66:1-20.

Shout for joy to God, all the earth!
    Sing the glory of his name;
make his praise glorious.
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power
that your enemies cringe before you.
All the earth bows down to you;
they sing praise to you,
they sing the praises of your name.”[a]

Come and see what God has done,
his awesome deeds for mankind!
He turned the sea into dry land,
they passed through the waters on foot—
come, let us rejoice in him.
He rules forever by his power,
his eyes watch the nations—
let not the rebellious rise up against him.

Praise our God, all peoples,
let the sound of his praise be heard;
he has preserved our lives
and kept our feet from slipping.
10 For you, God, tested us;
you refined us like silver.
11 You brought us into prison
and laid burdens on our backs.
12 You let people ride over our heads;
we went through fire and water,
but you brought us to a place of abundance.

13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings
and fulfill my vows to you—
14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice fat animals to you
and an offering of rams;
I will offer bulls and goats.

16 Come and hear, all you who fear God;
let me tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth;
his praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened;
19 but God has surely listened
and has heard my prayer.
20 Praise be to God,
who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!

The Father tenderly loves you

God's love

“At that day you will ask in My Name, and I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf (for it will be unnecessary). For the Father Himself (tenderly) loves you because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from the Father.” – John 16:26,27 (Amp)

We know that Jesus often referred to God as His “Father,” but God is also the Father of all His creation, that includes you and I as well. We are the children of the Most High God, creator and sustainer of the entire universe.

At the beginning of creation, God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26), therefore, we are His offspring, made in the image of God – spirit, soul and body. That’s why God loves us so much, because we are created in His likeness.

If you have ever had any children of your own, people will often say, “Why, he looks just like his father,” or “She looks just like her mother.” This generally produces a good sense of pride within us to be reminded that are children our uniquely ours, a product of our own bodies and genetic DNA.I believe God, our heavenly Father, looks at us within the same sense of pride and accomplishment. He views us with the same eyes of love that we also view our children with.

God loves that we love Jesus.

”…For the Father Himself (tenderly) loves you because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from the Father.”

Jesus said that God tenderly loves us because we love Jesus and believe that Jesus came from God the Father.

Do you love Jesus? Do you believe that Jesus came from God the Father? Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins? Have you invited Jesus Christ [Messiah] to be the Savior and Lord of your life?

If so, the Bible gives us this wonderful promise in John 3:16-17:

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only [unique] Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”

Do you fully understand what that is saying? God loves us so much that He sent His unique Son, Jesus Christ, not to condemn us, but to save us. That’s the greatest news isn’t it? We don’t need to be afraid of Jesus; He is not our enemy, but our friend! He wasn’t sent into this world by God the Father to hurt us, but to help us, so that we would not be punished for our sins and be lost forever. Jesus wants to demonstrate His love for us by giving us the gift of salvation and eternal life.

Forgetting those things in the past.

“…but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before…” Philippians 3:13

Do you want to experience God’s love today? Do you want to forget all the bad things you’ve done in the past and begin a new life today? Do you want to be forgiven of your sins and receive the promise of eternal life?

If so, pray this prayer with me right now:

”Dear Jesus, I believe you are the unique Son of God who died in my place on the cross. Please forgive me of my sins. I invite you to become the Savior and Lord of my life. Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer today and received God’s free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, write us and let us know so that we can rejoice with you and welcome you into the redeemed family of God. If you don’t have a Bible and need one, we’ll also be happy to send you one free of charge for you to study.

We love you in Christ, as God the Father loves you. Amen.

Oh How I Love Jesus

There is a name I love to hear
I love to sing its worth
It sounds like music in my ear
The sweetest name on earth

O how I love Jesus
O how I love Jesus
O how I love Jesus
Because He first loved me

The Grace of Giving

“…be strong in the grace of giving…But I want to see if your love for God is really true.”  – 2 CORINTHIANS 8:7-8

Donating to Real Jesus Ministries is "seed sown on good soil."

Donating to Real Jesus Ministries is “seed sown on good soil.”

Have you ever realized that your desire to give to your church or other ministries is a GIFT (Greek: Charis) from God? When you are moved in your heart to give your tithes and offerings, you are responding to a special gift that God has placed in your heart. If God did not place that gift there in the first place, you would continue to live the selfish, self-centered existence that we are all naturally inclined to pursue as a result of our fallen natures.

When God places the desire to give of your finances to a worthy ministry like Real Jesus Ministries, He waits to see how you will respond. Will you ignore the Holy Spirit’s promptings? Will you pretend you never heard Him speak to you and continue to hoard your money and hope some other person will make up the difference? Will you continue to argue that you can’t trust ministries anymore because of the financial abuses of others in the past? Or, will you reflect on how much you love God and how grateful you are for what He has done in your life and are more than willing to show your gratitude – by supporting those who are genuinely doing His work?

“But I want to see if your love for God is really true.”

The decision to give, or not to give, is a matter of having the right attitude. It is also evidence of whether you truly love God.

Many religious people claim they love Jesus, but when it comes time to give, they deny Him by selfishly holding back on their giving, or at best, being miserly in their giving. When the offering plate is passed around at church, instead of being faithful with their complete tithes (that’s 10% of your weekly or monthly gross income), they are the ones who only toss-in a measly dollar or two – just to “keep up appearances.” Jesus described this kind of person as a religious hypocrite, “those who honor me with their lips, but not their hearts. In vain do they worship God.” (Matthew 15:8-9)

Your heart is directly connected to your pocketbook.

If anyone truly loves God, He will have a generous heart and be willing to give sacrificially of their finances. Sacrificial giving was an essential part of Christ’s nature and character (2 Cor. 8:9). God wants us to have the same giving heart that our Lord demonstrated. When we truly love God, we will be especially generous about supporting our local church first in providing for the salaries of our pastors, and the basic expenses of the church or ministry. Secondly, we will also support other ministries outside the local church who are also spiritually feeding us, winning the lost to Christ, and edifying the Body of Christ.

Real Jesus Ministries is a worthy ministry to support.

If you have been blessed by our teaching messages and other biblical resources, why don’t you consider sending us a love offering today? Your donation to Real Jesus Ministries is “seed sown on good ground” because many lives are being helped around the world through our various outreaches. Your faithful partnership with Real Jesus Ministries will surely provide you with great rewards in heaven.

Spiritual Fitness

Treadmill exercising at gym. Are you both spiritually fit & physically fit? By Pastor Luis Yosefus.

Are you both spiritually fit and physically fit?

Do you try to exercise every day? Perhaps you walk or ride a bike to keep your heart and body in good health. I go to the local gym in the morning and walk for half an hour on the treadmill while I watch the news on large TV screens and listen on my portable earphones that plug right into the treadmill machine. I also workout on a variety of machines that keep my other muscles fit. One of these machines is called “The Reformer.” It’s an exercise machine that has a seat that slides sideways. As you grab the handle and twist your sides, it helps keep your belly fat to a minimum.

However, before I go to the gym, I make sure that I spend quality time with God each morning in Bible study and prayer. This is the most important type of fitness I need – exercises to keep me “spiritually fit.”

This exercise machine called “The Reformer” reminded me that spiritually speaking, the Bible is a “reforming” machine. But just like the machine in the gym, it’s not much good if all you do is stare at it. The Spiritual Reformer, Scripture, is effective only when used. In fact that’s the only way it’s effective. According to the instructions for the exercise equipment, “The Reformer” is designed to:

STRENGTHEN … STRETCH … ARTICULATE … REDUCE

Scripture has these same goals. Scripture will strengthen us in every aspect of our lives. Scripture will also stretch our understanding of God and our faith. Scripture will also articulate the core truths of God’s will for our lives. Scripture also reduces so many unnecessary and harmful things in our lives, such as fear, anxiety, bitterness. Used properly, this equipment can keep us from doing what is wrong, and help us to do what is right.

The Bible is a reforming machine!

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. “ -2 Timothy 2:15

comment_smComment from Cygnet: “You’re right. We need to keep physical and spiritual exercise in the right perspective. Although physical exercise has been known for centuries to create strong healthy bodies, it cannot compare to spiritual exercise. As it says in I Timothy 4:8: Bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having the promise of life that now is, and of that which is yet to come.”

Fear Not When You’re Walking With Jesus

Pastor Luis Yosefus

“Then after that He said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. His disciples said unto him, Rabbi, your enemies of late have sought to stone You; and You go there again? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world. But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.” – John 11:7-10 [JCV]

When Jesus decided to return to Judea, His disciples became alarmed at His decision. They were deeply concerned about the danger He was putting Himself in. They tried to reason with Jesus, “Don’t you know that if you go back there your enemies will try to stone you and take your life?” I believe Jesus replied in this manner, “Don’t you worry about Me. First of all, I am the light of the world. Secondly. I know that I am walking in the light and my Father is watching over Me. As long as any of you are walking according to the will of God you should fear no danger. Our Heavenly Father will watch over you and protect you. He will never allow you to stumble. However, if you’re not walking in the light, but in darkness, you certainly have reason to fear. God’s divine protection will not cover you, and your enemies will triumph over you. You will stumble as those who are walking in darkness.”

Are you walking in the light today? Have you received Jesus as your Savior and Lord? Are you doing the best you can to live your life according the will of God? If so, then you have nothing to fear when you’re walking with Jesus. Your enemies can try to intimidate you and make threats against you, but with God at your side, no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17) Stand on God’s promises of protection. David said, “I have set the LORD always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.” – Psalm 16:8

The Righteous Shall Flourish

Date Palm bearing fruit in Israel.

“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he hall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of Yahovah shall flourish in the courts of our God.” – Psalm 92:12-13

Have you made the Sabbath a part of your life? The LORD promises a blessing for those who observe His commandment to rest on the seventh day (Saturday) of the week. God promised to bless those who honor the special day that He sanctified from creation. The Sabbath is a sign between you and your God.

“They shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be full of sap and green: to show that the LORD is upright…” – Psalm 92:13-15

Do you want to be like the palm tree that is blessed and thrives and continues to bring much fruit in its old age? Start keeping God’s seventh-day Sabbath this week. It begins at sundown on Friday nights, and ends at sundown on Saturday nights. According to God’s reckoning of time for a twenty-four hour day, the new day always begins at sundown. The first book of the Bible records this method of keeping time, and God’s people have been practicing this method of reckoning for thousands of years.

“And the evening and the morning were the first day.” – Genesis 1:5

May God bless you with His wonderful presence this Sabbath.

Shabbat Shalom,

Was Jesus a Rabbi?

Listen to this audio
message on Chirbit.com

http://chirb.it/mOHw0M

Pastor Luis Yosefus

The simple answer to the question is, “Yes!”  Jesus was indeed a Jewish “teacher” of God’s Law and “Master” or spiritual leader over those who followed Him as His disciples. That’s what Rabbi means – a teacher or master.

A Rabbi in early first century Judaism and Christianity was very similar to what we call a “Pastor” or “Preacher” today.  The title “Reverend” that is commonly in use today was never permitted in the early church, since it was considered blasphemous to call any man Reverend (which means to be revered).  God alone is to be worshipped and revered.

Years ago, when I was first ordained as a minister of the gospel I was given the title “Reverend Luis.”  I used this religious title for a brief time not knowing any better. I must confess that being addressed as “Reverend” inflated my ego a little bit and I enjoyed the false sense that I was somehow better than others, on a higher spiritual level than other Christians. But as I grew older (and hopefully wiser), I saw the arrogance of such a preposterous title. I humbled myself before God and asked for His forgiveness. Afterwards I discontinued using the title Reverend or allowing anyone to address me in such a manner.  I prefer to be called Pastor or Shepherd or Teacher of God’s flock, under the authority of the Great Shepherd Himself – Jesus the Messiah.

In Jesus’ case, however, he was more than just a Rabbi or Teacher.  He was the only begotten Son of God, the long awaited Messiah of Israel, and Redeemer of all mankind.  To say that Jesus was simply a good teacher or godly prophet is to minimize His spiritual authority and ignore His divine attributes.

Today for the sake of brevity, we will focus on His role as a Jewish Rabbi who was anointed of God to correctly teach God’s people about the Kingdom of heaven.  As we seek to further understand the Jewish roots of our Christian faith, we must realize that Jesus was not only sent by God the Father to die for the remission of our sins, but also to dispel many false religious doctrines and traditions that had perverted the worship of Yahovah God.  Judaism, 2000 years ago (as well as today) had been contaminated by thousands of man-made traditions that had made the Word of God void.

In Mark 7:6-9, Jesus rebuked some of the Rabbis and religious leaders of His day for being hypocrites and only honoring God with their lips and not their hearts.

He answered and said to them, Well has Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. However, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things you do. And he said to them, Full well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition.”

They had substituted outward acts such as washing of hands, cups, pots, and brazen vessels, for the more important attitudes of inner holiness. Outwardly, these religious leaders appeared righteous, but inwardly they had no real love for God. Sound familiar?

Many of the Jewish Rabbis and teachers of the Law were guilty of placing man-made traditions above or before God’s written Word.  The same problem exists within the Christian churches today. Man-made or denominational doctrines have also superseded the Word of God. Jesus the Rabbi would again rebuke many of the religious shephereds (Christian pastors and preachers) today for being hypocrites and following the traditions of men instead of Gods Word.

Jesus indeed was the greatest Rabbi that has ever lived!  If we are to practice an authentic form of Christianity, Jesus the Messiah, our Savior and Lord of our lives, must have the final word over everything that we accept as truth, and practice.

If you’re not sure if your church or denomination is teaching the absolute truth according to the Old and New Testament Bible, go to Rabbi Jesus. Pray and ask Him to show you the way.  Rabbi Jesus declare in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one can come to God the Father except through Me.” AMEN.
