Meekness Is Not Weakness

Bible Word Studies: Lowly

“Behold your King is coming to you, LOWLY, and sitting on a donkey…” – Matthew 21:5

The word lowly in this verse is the Greek praus (pronounced prah-ooce). It describes the humility and meekness of Jesus as He confronted His enemies who hated Him and wanted to crucify Him. As He entered Jerusalem lowly but confidently while riding on a donkey, He did so in a manner that was unassuming, mild and gentle. But don’t confuse Jesus’ meekness with weakness; on the contrary. His meekness was power under perfect control.

As followers of Jesus, we too must be meek in our character and strive to always maintain control of our emotions and corresponding actions. When the devil is using other people (sometimes even religious people) to hurt you, criticize you, assassinate your character, speak falsely of you, or slander your name, remember to bear it with patience and meekness – just as Jesus did. When we are able to endure these trials without retaliating and leave the vengeance up to God – that’s power!

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” – Matthew 5:11-12

You Raise Me Up

[Jesus] When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary; When troubles come and my heart burdened be; Then, I am still and wait here in the silence, Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up… To more than I can be.

The God Who Comforts Us

“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”– 2 Cor. 1:4

Many think that when God comforts us, our troubles should go away. But if that were always so, people would turn to God only out of a desire to be relieved of pain and not out of love for him. We must understand that being comforted can also mean receiving strength, encouragement, and hope to deal with our troubles.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, allow God to comfort you. But also remember that every trial you endure will help you comfort other people who are suffering similar troubles.
