Good Friday is a religious holiday observed primarily by believers commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The tradition of observing Good Friday as the day Jesus was sacrificed on the cross is based on a faulty interpretation of the biblical chronology.
Although many well-meaning Christians observe this holiday throughout the world, the truth is, Jesus was NOT crucified on Friday. He was most likely crucified on a Thursday afternoon in order that He might fulfill the prophecy of having been in the grave three days and three nights:
“For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” – Matthew 12:40
He was resurrected after sundown on Saturday night, which is the beginning of Sunday according to biblical reckoning (a day begins at sundown and ends the following day at sundown).
Because Jesus was the fulfillment of the Passover Lamb that takes away the sins of the world, He was crucified on the first day of Passover, which never falls on a Friday.
Nevertheless, let this correction of days not diminish the fact that God loved us so much, that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus the Messiah, the holy and sinless Lamb of God, to die for our sins, so we could be saved and not perish (John 3:16). Amen.
